South Africa, as a model of a maturing African democratic state, has a lot to learn from the recent US presidential race between Barack Obama and his rival John McCain, pictured.
This election was marked by policy debate, a promise of a better life for the people and issues relating to the advancement of democracy. The election was non-violent and the candidates freely campaigned throughout all the states, without fear or intimidation.
Obama emerged victorious and McCain conceded defeat and offered support to the newly-elected president.
In contrast, our country is a complete opposite to the US. Take for example the personal attacks and character assassinations taking place here.
We see members of the ruling party disrupting legitimate meetings of other parties, denying them the right to free assembly. This is wrong and it should not be allowed.
Credit should go to leaders such as ANC chairman in Limpopo Cassel Mathale, who spoke out against members of his own party involved in such activities. Other leaders, as guardians of our young democracy, should follow suit.
