Finally a quality foe for Mwelase

Bongani Magasela

Sanity has prevailed. Boxing fans public, who have been short-changed regarding the quality of opponents for sensational Bongani Mwelase, will now see him in a real boxing match.

"Cyclones", the young, fearless and gifted fighter from Meadowlands, Soweto, who has brushed aside 11 of his 12 opponents, will defend the WBF welterweight title against Ali "The Silent Assassin" Nuumbembe.

Nuumbembe, the WBA Pan African welterweight champion and celebrated Olympian, is from Oshakati in Namibia, but is based in the UK.

Nuumbembe won the Commonwealth title from Kevin Anderson in February last year, but lost to Craig Watson in December. However, he made up for the loss by winning the WBA B-grade belt from Welcome Ntshingila.

Nuumbembe stopped Daniel Kaefer in Namibia in last month. That was his seventh short cut win from 20 victories against three defeats and a draw.

He will have to relinquish the WBA Pan African title whether he wins or loses against Mwelase, so he will be determined not to go home empty-handed.

That should bring out the best in Mwelase who has not fought any credible opponent since defeating Lucky Lewele for the SA and WBC International belts.

Mwelase's first-round wins over Thabo Mashishi and Juan Villarreal this year has left the boxing public still unsure about his competence.

His clash with Nuumbembe will be presented by Robs Promotions at Ride Hall, ARWA Centre, Parys in Free State on November 14.
