Mfundi Vundla executive producer of South Africa's most-loved soapie, Generations, has resigned from the ANC and pledged his support for the breakaway Shikota party.

"I will be there in Bloemfontein in December not just to support the initiative but to become a member of the new party," he said.

Vundla, 62, sent his resignation letter to the ANC Sandton branch secretary in his area, Trevor April, two days ago.

"If Gauteng's MEC of education Angie Motshega utters statements which are to the effect that matric is not important, then I cannot be part of an organisation like that," he said.

Vundla, pictured, said that he was also disturbed by the level of intolerance in the ANC and that he supported the formation of the breakaway party.

"The language of violence by the ANC Youth League president Julius Malema and the attack on the judiciary by ANC has gone too far," Vundla said.

He said that the recent utterances by the ANCYL caused him to fear what the future held for the country's youth.

ANC spokesman Jessie Duarte last night said she welcomed Vundla's resignation.

"We wish him well in his new-found home, but that is not even breaking news," she said.

Vundla was a member of the ANC for 38 years.

He was actively involved in the ANC's promotion in the US during the early 70s before returning to South Africa in 1992.

Vundla's resignation comes a few days after actor and TV personality Hlomla Dandala pledged his support for Shikota.
