Tournament a slam dunk for Free State

Free State Basketball Association has given a "mandate' to their men's and women's teams to return from the inter-provincial champions with medals.

The revived Basketball South Africa tournament will take place at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth from December 15 to 22.

Dumisani Tuka, the association's boss, said: "We had our provincial trials to select the two teams to Port Elizabeth in Kutlwanong last weekend.

"We still have to decide on the appointment of the coach, but Free State provincial director of coaching Solomon Nxumalo was in charge of the selection process.

"We are convinced that the team we have selected will make us proud. The mandate to them is to each come back with a medal, the colour is not that important."

Malumbete Ralethe, BSA deputy president, said: "We are quite pleased that our provinces have started preparing for the tournament. We will be using it to select teams for various southern Africa and African qualifying games, starting early next year."

The Free State teams are:

Men - Mpho Makhutla, Mpho Motlolisi, Vusumuzi Sithole, Itumeleng Makolomakoe, Thibedi Pitsi, Ditshwanelo Mpati, Prince Sokapase, Eric Mofokeng, Thomas Melupe, Isaac Selelani, Adrian Kasonga, Baxolile Majola, Modipa Rakometsi, Teboho Phafoli and Moeketsi Mokoena.

Women - Fono Mokolutlo, Neo Mahlapha, Nnini Ramontseng, Lerato Kotoane, Alice Direko, Lesego Tsipane, Vuyiswa Gumaka, Tshidi Mokati, Siphokazi Ben, Suzan Maleho, Mathapelo Rampai, Ntombizanele Peter, Dinah Modise, Motlagomang Nkoko Ntlaletsa, Nthabiseng Motaung and Philadelphia Khoabane.
