The education department is satisfied with the way the matric examination is progressing.
The only incident that has marred the exams so far was when pupils at the Siyaphambili Secondary School, an independent school in Orange Farm in the Vaal, had to be calmed by police when they were told that they could not write the exams.
They could only write next June as part-time candidates because their school registered them as candidate B's. The school did this because it did not believe the pupils would pass and as a result it would lose its subsidy.
Gauteng education spokesman Panyaza Lesufi said: "We decided that learners should write, but they will not be assessed like other learners because they do not have portfolios."
He said if the school continued to function in the same way next year, its subsidy would be withdrawn.
