The South African Democratic Congress (Sadec) will stand against the African National Congress in by-elections in at least 50 wards across the country on December 10th.
Yesterday a steady stream of councillors in the Free State and Western Cape announced they were quitting the ANC to stand as Shikota councillors in the by-elections.
November 12 is the cutoff date for ward councillors to resign from the ANC if they want to contest the by-elections as Sadec members.
Free State Shikota convener Mzwandile Hleko confirmed that 17 of the 67 Mangaung councillors have resigned from the ANC.
"We will contest every ward and don't have a problem going toe-to-toe with the ANC," he said.
Eight councilors from Mantsopa municipality are expected to ditch the ANC this week and three ward councillors from Philippi and Crossroads, who resigned yesterday, said they were given the go-ahead by their constituents on Tuesday night to run as Shikota councillors.
Another 22 councillors have resigned in other parts of Western Cape. In Buffalo City 10 ward councillors are preparing to jump ship and eight ward councillors from Khayelitsha and Guguletu will announce their resignations on Friday.
Constitutional law expert Shadrack Gutto said Sadec would have to soon develop its policies and translate them into an election manifesto.
