A 17-year-old teenager, her boyfriend and her mother have been arrested in connection with the killing of her father, who was a chief in Gingindlovu near Eshowe.
Chief Thulani Mhlongo, of Wombane, was shot dead at his home on Saturday night.
The killers allegedly entered at the gate while he was driving down the driveway.
He was shot several times while trying to flee into the house.
Police arrested his wife, daughter and the boyfriend on Monday, saying preliminary investigations had established that they had orchestrated the hit on Mhlongo.
A relative, who did not want to be identified, said she believed the chief was about to get married to his second wife and that this could be the motive.
"He had already paid ilobolo and all that was left was the white wedding in a few months' time," said the relative.
The relative also said it was no secret that the first wife hated the fact that there would be another woman.
The area's residents are still in shock over the killing.
They described Mhlongo as someone who cared very deeply for his community.
He had also worked as a bus driver for Washesha Bus Services.
Police spokesman Mbongeni Mdlalose confirmed yesterday that the police had made arrests and the suspects would appear in court soon.
