The KwaZulu-Natal Transport Alliance, which had registered with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) as a political party to contest next year's general elections, has abandoned its electoral dream.
The alliance yesterday said it would instead vote for the ANC.
This emerged yesterday at a media conference in Durban at which the ANC in the eThekwini region welcomed Eugene Hadebe, chairman of the transport alliance, as a member.
The party also welcomed 60 other members who had defected from the Thokoza Women's Hostel, an IFP stronghold in the city.
Hadebe's new political allegiance means he is no longer a member of Ziba Jiyane's South African Democratic Convention (Sadeco), where he was treasurer.
He said he resigned from Sadeco on Tuesday.
Hadebe said joining the ANC was "like returning home".
"We registered with the IEC last year but when Jacob Zuma won in Polokwane we decided to disband the party," he said.
"I decided to join the ANC because Zuma understands the problems of the taxi industry.
"Though I'm chairman of the transport alliance I'm not going to force members to vote for the ANC. They will vote for the parties of their choice."
One of the IFP members who joined the ANC, Ayanda Ndlovu, said: "There are many more who are ANC members but are afraid to come out because of intimidation and victimisation.
"To be able to stay in that hostel one must have an IFP membership card - but today we want to declare that we are no longer IFP members because the party is not going anywhere."
