A 41-year-old man from Mpumalanga was arrested in connection with the rape of an eight-year-old girl, who was left alone at a farm compound while her mother visited a neighbour on Sunday night.

Mpumalanga's Superintendent Abie Khoabane said the man apparently noticed that the child's mother was out and sneaked into her quarters at a Buffelspruit farm compound near Malelane at about 9pm.

"When the mother returned a while later the child told her that 'umalume' (uncle) had injured her down there," Khoabane said.

The mother inspected the child and concluded that she had been raped.

She called her neighbours to come and hear what the child had just told her.

The police were called to the scene and the man was arrested. The child was taken to a doctor who confirmed the rape.

The man is said to be a resident of the compound and is expected to appear in the Malelane magistrate's court today.

Meanwhile, two men in their early 20s were arrested at Casteel near Bushbuckridge for allegedly raping a 19-year-old girl in the early hours of Saturday.

Khoabane said the girl was asleep when she was woken up by the sound of a breaking window at 2am.

"Before she knew what was happening two masked men, armed with guns, were in her bedroom," he said.

The men robbed the girl of R300 and a cellphone before forcing her out of the house.

They dragged the girl to a nearby river, where they repeatedly raped and assaulted her.

They left her on the scene and the girl later managed to call the police.
