No favours will be given to women and youth contractors entering the construction sector, KwaZulu-Natal MEC for economic development Zweli Mkhize said yesterday.
Speaking at the Suncoast conference centre in Durban, Mkhize said he was concerned about some contractors who expected favours from departments simply because they were women and are just entering the sector.
The departments of economic development and public works hosted the meeting.
The two departments had a chance to hear of the plight of women in construction.
"People must work hard to meet the required standards and deliver quality work so that we uphold the country's high standard. There are no short cuts. There are requirements that have to be met and we can't compromise on standards," Mkhize said.
While he encouraged partnerships and joint ventures between established and emerging contractors, he issued a stern warning against those who agree to be used as front s in exchange for cash.
"Fronting is fraud. We encourage joint ventures so that people can learn skills. It is not about showing faces to get money because that undermines what we are trying to do.
"Joint ventures are encouraged to bridge the gap from the past and to level the playing field to ensure that opportunities are available to those with potential."
