The importance of food security is being stressed by Nestle South Africa through its yearly community nutrition programme.

An event designed to honour selfless achievers in community nutrition, most of whom are women, the 2008 Nestle Community Nutrition Awards takes place at the Inanda Club in Sandton today at 11.30am.

Gauteng agriculture MEC Khabisi Mosunkutu will give the keynote address.

The awards, which started in 1993, honours and rewards women who improve the status of their communities through nutrition projects to help reduce hunger and malnutrition.

Winners will get R150000 and R75000, while R30000 will go to the most promising food garden. There are also six prizes of R5000 each.

The project creates awareness and teaches people how to start backyard and community food gardens, and:

lConducts workshops and mentorship programmes highlighting the need for food security to curb malnutrition and poverty;

lProvides infrastructural and institutional support; and

lHelps participants to improve projects and encourages them to inspire others. - Victor Mecoamere
