Advertising student Ntobeko Ximba has walked away with a top-design prize in a national competition.

The third-year student from the AAA School of Advertising has been chosen as one of three joint winners in this year's Elle Decoration Solve Centre student competition.

The brief to students was to develop a functional and sculptural coffee table.

Ximba's entry was inspired by the honeycomb, which he appropriately named the Nyosi Table - nyosi being isiZulu for bee.

The base of the table was made from a number of hardboard tubes and he used recycled glass for the table top.

The judges had to whittle down 79 unique entries from around the country. Winners were announced at a gala awards evening earlier this month.

The judging panel included EDIDA emerging designer of the year Adriaan Hugo; Sean Weldon, ID Solutions; Doreen de Waal, Elle decoration stylist and contributing editor; Jo Skelton, Elle decoration art director; Karen Roos, Elle decoration editor; and Chris Weylandt of Weylandts.

Prototypes were made of the three winner's designs by Weylandts design stores and one design was chosen to be manufactured for sale in stores next year.

The AAA is distinctly positioned in a league of its own through accreditation to the South African Qualifications Authority. It is also the only education institution in Southern Africa to be accredited to the International Advertising Association in the US.

The school also offers students BA degrees and diploma courses.
