ANC women and youth must learn from Ma Sisulu

Mama Albertina Sisulu, a fearless fighter and liberator, has just turned 90.

Mama Albertina Sisulu, a fearless fighter and liberator, has just turned 90.

The disciplined and loyal wife of Walter Sisulu is one of many daughters of the ANC who have contributed immensely to the liberation of black people - and women in particular.

The Sisulus have been a shining example of a struggle family. Like her husband Mama Sisulu dedicated herself to the people of this country.

She was one of the presidents of the UDF, which was the ANC's "internal wing" when it was still banned.

She is a decent mother of our nation who never put her personal interests above that of the ANC, UDF the nation.

She, like her husband, never became embroiled in controversies. A treason trialist, detained many times, Ma Sisulu never betrayed her conscience or her principles.

Instead of calling people "dogs", the ANC Women's League must learn from Albertina Sisulu, who never resorted to insults and derogatory remarks when confronted by challenges.

Like Ma Sisulu the democrat, we must learn to be tolerant towards those who do not share our views - even within the ANC.

Mama possesses true humanity and we must continue relying on her for those high ideals and ethical conduct. She was the perfect activist. The likes of Julius Malema should learn from this giant of giants.
