Netballers gear up for Caribbean ordeal

There will be no rest for national netballers, as they prepare to take on yet another Caribbean country.

After emphatically thrashing Barbados in Cape Town last week, Carin Strauss and her charges will be challenging the lions in their lair next month.

South Africa leaves for Jamaica to participate in a three- way tournament with the hosts and Trinidad and Tobago.

The white wash of 11th ranked Barbados will have to be placed in context, and Strauss acknowledges this.

"At number four in the world, Jamaica will be a different proposition for us. But I want the girls to test themselves against the best in the world," said Strauss.

Most importantly, the coach is keen to end the year one place higher in the world rankings, which will place South Africa at number eight.

"Its important that we beat Trinidad, who are ranked eighth.

"We will never be satisfied until we occupy a more respectable position," she said.

Strauss expressed her delight at the level of fitness displayed by her players, who she said maintained their intensity for the whole 60 minutes of each of the recent matches.

"I hope they can now see why we want them to lead lives of professional athletes," she said.

Netball South Africa is due to name its team today, but Strauss might have to contend with the annoyance of having some of her key players unavailable.

"Players like Nonhle Gwevu are busy with their exams, and it is going to be difficult to take her with us," she said.
