Nail these criminals

The main task of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is to ensure that justice prevails at all times for victims of crime.

Its mission is essentially to prosecute without fear, favour and prejudice and to work with the public to solve and prevent crime.

It therefore comes as a shock that certain officials of the NPA have been implicated in a R500 million scam that involves widespread tender rigging and financial irregularities.

The massive fraud is revealed in an Auditor-General report released a few days after Parliament voted to disband the Scorpions, the investigative arm of the NPA.

Some NPA officials have been suspended, others are facing criminal charges and some have resigned. Of great concern is that the scam tarnishes the integrity of the NPA as a corruption buster and champion of justice.

The auditor-general's office must be lauded for uncovering the rot among the very people who are expected to prosecute wrongdoers.

The NPA's vision is to guarantee lawfulness in society so that the public can live in freedom and security.

It is therefore imperative that officials implicated in this multimillion-rand scandal are exposed and hauled before a court of law to face the music.
