Rising sports leader Malesela "Gogga" Maleka has made history by becoming a leader of a major South African sports federation at the age of 30.
As expected, Maleka was elected unopposed as new Basketball South Africa president at their annual general meeting in Johannesburg at the weekend.
"The mandate to the executive committee is loud and clear that we must revive amateur basketball, with the focus on development," said Maleka.
"We need to revive all the leagues and competitions at the primary and secondary schools, otherwise we may as well close shop.
"It is also part of our plans to revive the Campus Basketball League so that we can see more competitive games played at our universities.
"Our universities have always been a feeder to our national teams, we will be approaching Sascoc for assistance.
"We also plan to make basketball more visible by using the newspapers, radio and television to market it so that people are up to date with our programmes."
He added that the new BSA leadership will also introduce mini basketball festivals in partnership with the local and provincial governments.
Back to the elections, Limpopo medico Malumbete Ralethe (unopposed) and Ntombizanele Papa were elected first and second vice presidents.
Zanele Ngwenya is the treasurer. Additional members are Joe Machaba, Dali Dzingwa, Dumisani Tuka, Monwabisi Planga and Mosotho Kgaka.
l Ralethe has also lauded the Gauteng MEC for sport, arts, culture and recreation, Barbara Creecy for helping them revive the game.
This was after the Gauteng provincial government on Friday announced that they were coming on board as partners in the new Gauteng Basketball League.
Besides the senior league, the Gauteng Basketball Association will also be developing junior basketball programmes.
Pro Sport Consulting will run the senior league.
Ralethe said: "MEC Creecy has always been supportive when it comes to sport development, which is appreciated."
Creecy said: "This is yet another example of our government's strategy that seeks to develop, nurture and support talent."
