Former president of the women's league of the New Church of Southern Africa mission in Orlando East, Soweto, Mother Suzan Seponki Kunene, died on October 16 at the Sebokeng Hospital after a long illness.

The 72-year-old church leader was a source of comfort and a community builder. She was described as a woman of substance and integrity, who was also loving, caring and jolly.

Born on April 14 1936 at Top location in the Vaal, Kunene was strict but a pillar of strength to her children.

As spiritual leader and healer she dedicated most of her time to spreading the Word of God.

She married Reverend Boy Paulos Kunene in 1954. They had three daughters and two sons.

She helped her husband build the New Church of Southern Africa.

Because of their calling they spent a lot of time moving from one province to another, expanding the church.

Kunene served the New Church of Southern Africa headquarters in Orlando East, Soweto, for 12 years.

Her husband Paulos said: "It is true that behind every successful man is a strong woman."

He said he would not have been able to cope without her unwavering support over the years.

Kunene is survived by her husband, four children, 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She will be buried at Vanderbijlpark Cemetery tomorrow.

The service at the Bretheren Mission Church of South Africa, Zone 6 Ext 2, Sebokeng, starts at 8.30am.
