Jazz juggernaut Don Laka's wild past has come back to haunt him.
He is being accused of neglecting Karabo Kgeledi, a child he fathered with one of his old flames.
Today, while the prolific musician is hammering out plans to launch an independent radio station to assist fellow local musicians, we can reveal that the 18-year-old youth is being cared for by a 64-year-old white man of Bedfordview in eastern Johannesburg.
Laka is said to have romped with a groupie. When their love boat hit the rocks he did a bunk - but not before making her pregnant.
This led to the frustrated mother dumping their three-month-old son with Mantoa Pholoane of Zone 9 in Meadowlands, Soweto.
The Good Samaritan confirmed yesterday that Karabo was only 12 weeks old when his mother disappeared.
"When Karabo turned 12 his mother came back and told me she had been in prison," Pholoane said. "Karabo is now living with Terry in Bedfordview but he still visits me because I raised him.
"I only discovered he was Don Laka's child when he went to stay with Terry. Don never thanked me," she said.
Laka denied he neglected his son.
He said: "No one can claim I am not looking after him. He stayed with a guardian and I expect the guardian to tell me [what needs to be done] because he is the one I am dealing with."
Asked why he had abandoned his child Laka said: "I don't want to comment. I can assure you that he is being adequately looked after."
Terry, the guardian who won't give his surname, said: "Leave Karabo alone. I have been his guardian for a long time and I can tell you that his mother has never contributed a cent."
