R1,4bn more for stadiums

The national government has set aside an extra R1,4billion this financial year to cover the burgeoning cost of the 2010 Soccer World Cup stadiums.

The national government has set aside an extra R1,4billion this financial year to cover the burgeoning cost of the 2010 Soccer World Cup stadiums.

The allocation was made in the adjustment budget tabled yesterday.

In addition, R600million has been allocated for high-speed Internet access between the stadiums and Telkom's national network.

Finance Minister Trevor Manuel said preparations for the tournament were "on course", though costs had escalated.

"Government will provide funding for part of the cost, municipalities will share the burden," he said.

Support would also be provided for digital television to meet international broadcasting requirements. Host cities would benefit from an extra three-year R835million allocation for public transport infrastructure. - Sapa
