Anti-apartheid stalwart Albertina Sisulu celebrated her 90th birthday in a glittering ceremony at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg yesterday.
The event coincided with the 5th anniversary of the Walter Sisulu Paediatric Cardiac Centre for Africa (WSPCCA). Among the guests were former president Nelson Mandela, his wife Graca Machel, Housing Minister Lindiwe Sisulu and businessman Saki Macozoma.
They all wished Sisulu a happy birthday, while opera trio Afro Tenors sang her a birthday song.
The 90-year-old birthday girl looked beautiful in her burgundy suit. She did not make a speech or cut the cake. She was, however, pushed in her wheelchair to the stage where she posed for pictures with Mandela and the children who had benefited from the WSPCCA.
WSPCCA provides funds for life-saving cardiac surgery to underprivileged children with congenital heart disorders in Africa.
Robin Kinsley, head of cardiology at the centre, said: "We have cared for Africa's children for the past five years, but have saved 250 children's lives."
