The six-week long strike by Durban Solid Waste (DSW) agency employees has ended and hundreds of dismissed workers are due to resume their duties today.
DSW department head Raymond Rampersad said yesterday the agency had agreed to consider increasing the workers' salaries after ANC officials intervened.
John Mchunu, ANC secretary in the eThekwini branch, said the ANC was approached by concerned workers and decided to step in. He said an agreement was reached at a meeting on Friday, where it was resolved that workers dismissed during the strike would be rehired.
The workers downed tools more than six weeks ago, demanding better wages, suitable benefits and better working conditions.
