A 29-year-old reservist was killed, two police officers wounded and an 18-year-old man arrested following a shootout at Brown's Farm in Nyanga, Western Cape police said.

Inspector Bernadine Steyn said yesterday the incident happened at about 11pm on Sunday in Sikhwalimanzi Street at Brown's Farm. Three officers approached a stationary red Mazda with four men inside when shots were fired at them from the vehicle.

A senior Provincial Visible Policing officer was shot in the stomach and both legs. He was in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

The men then abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. An 18-year-old man was arrested soon afterwards and will be charged with murder and two counts of attempted murder.

The other three men are still at large.
