Ajax Cape Town had to rely on penalties against a 10-man Platinum Stars on Saturday to book themselves a passage to the quarterfinals of the Telkom Knockout.
The Urban Warriors prevailed 4-3 at Athlone Stadium in the Mother City.
Both sides failed to find the net in regulation time and their forwards continued to fire blanks in extra time and had to settle for a penalty shootout.
Ajax's win saw them avenge the embarrassing 1-3 defeat against Stars in the final of the same competition in Atteridgeville in 2006.
The Tycoons were reduced to 10 men after referee Jonas Nhlapo sent off Joseph Mkalipa for a second bookable offence six minutes from interval.
This was after Mkalipa kicked the hosts' midfielder Sameehg Doutie.
Stars' coach Miguel Gamondi believes their exit from the lucrative tournament will enable them to concentrate on their league campaign.
"It will not be good for us to sit back and bemoan our exit from the tournament. It was a tough match for both teams but Ajax won and I wish them the best of luck for the rest of the competition."
His counterpart at the Urban Warriors, Craig Rosslee, said he was satisfied with the win, adding that they were looking forward to the quarterfinals.
"We are motivated by the win and this will go a long way in inspiring the players in the league campaign," Rosslee said.
He believes they should have beaten Stars in regulation time.
