The main road in Alexandra Township, Selborne Street, will be renamed after Reverend Sam Buti, who led the "Save Alexandra" campaign in 1979.

Buti, who still lives in Alexandra, supported families that were forcefully evicted and mobilised against the demolishing of the township by the apartheid government.

Yesterday, Buti who was president of the South African Council of Churches in 1978, decried the political turmoil in the ANC and the government approach in developing townships.

"People of Alex and elsewhere feel a terrible pain about what is happening in the ANC," he said.

"It is very painful that ordinary people are going to be forced to choose sides. People are confused and they do not take kindly to seeing the ANC bleeding.

"People know that the ANC liberated us and they do not like it when it is punished."
