After reading Mbhazima Shilowa's mandate outlining their new party, I am convinced that it is doomed.
The issues outlined are not new and don't warrant forming a new opposition party.
Shilowa raised issues such as reforming the electoral system to allow for a directly elected president.
This shows loyalty to individuals rather than the party. It shows that even if someone other than Jacob Zuma were voted president, Lekota and his cronies would still be rattled.
The second issue is public funding for political parties. We all know the secrecy surrounding this. Donating companies feel they have a right to be anonymous. Companies that supported apartheid are now being sued.
The third issue is the protection of the judiciary and constitution departments. Ironically, Judge Chris Nicholson's ruling of government interference was under Mbeki's leadership.
He interfered in Jackie Selebi's investigation and arrest, and suspended NPA boss Vusi Pikoli. The opposite was done to Zuma when Mbeki fired him.
Voters won't vote for a party whose leaders are angry and who have no new strategies. Lekota is forming a new party because the opposition is ineffective. Small parties will be competing against each other and not the ANC.
I owe it to the fallen and alive heroes to vote, even if it's not for the ANC.
