Police are literally "shooting to kill" suspects in the assassination of KwaZulu-Natal's top cop, Zethembe Chonco.

The seventh suspect was shot while in handcuffs early yesterday.

ICD head Tabisa Ralo said yesterday that since the province's MEC for transport, safety and community liaison Bheki Cele's "shoot to kill" statement, there was an increase in the number of suspects killed by police.

The latest, whose name has not been released, was being escorted by the Port Shepstone organised crime unit to prison when he was shot.

The ICD is investigating all seven incidents.

Ralo said according to their information the suspect complained the handcuffs were uncomfortable and asked that he be handcuffed from the front instead.

"While police were loosening his cuffs he attacked," said Ralo.

She said police in the escort car behind saw the front vehicle swerving from side to side and stopped to investigate.

"The suspect was shot and killed," she said.

Superintendent Chonco was killed in August.

He was responsible for highprofile arrests of taxi hitmen in the area.

Since then seven suspects have been shot and killed by the police.

Yesterday police spokesman Jay Naicker said the suspect was wanted for the murder of Chonco.
