Servant of the people to the end

Caroline Ntombentsha Mhlapo always wanted to serve her people. And she did just that - first as a teacher, then later as a nurse. So when she completed her senior primary education at Hukuwa, she enrolled at Emgwali Teachers Training Institute for a teaching diploma.

Born on February 11 1919 at Lower Didimana near Queenstown, Eastern Cape, she attended Lower Didimana Junior Primary School before enrolling at Hukuwa Senior Primary School.

Passionate to be a servant of the people, she chose to become a teacher. But years later, she moved to Johannesburg to study nursing.

That is where she met and married her late husband Luvuyo Mhlapo. They had three daughters and a son.

Mhlapo died on Monday at Flora Clinic. She will be buried tomorrow at Roodepoort Cemetery.

The service will be held at Good Shepherd Anglican Church in Tladi, Soweto, from 7am.
