Barely a day after famous taxi boss Emmanuel Chango Raolane was gunned down in his bedroom in Bolobedu, Tzaneen, two taxi drivers have also been shot dead in Sekhukhune.
The bodies of Andile Maetiso, 25, and Dion Lengoati, 35, were found with multiple gunshot wounds at Madiseng in the Greater Tubatse municipality yesterday morning.
The deceased were residents of Mashamthana village and Rustenburg.
Their lifeless bodies were found next to each other on the side of the road by passers-by who alerted the police.
Three men, aged between 19 and 25, were later arrested about five kilometres from the scene.
Provincial police spokesman Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba said yesterday the police acted on a tip-off.
Members of the community told the police about possible crime suspects and the police investigated.
"We found the three men, in Winterveld near Pretoria and arrested them," Ramatseba said. "Their names will be released after their court appearance."
One of the suspects, a 25-year-old man, was in possession of a licensed 9mm pistol suspected to have been used in the murder.
"We later discovered that the firearm belonged to the man's father," Ramatseba said.
He said the taxi in which the deceased were travelling was later found burnt beyond recognition a few kilometres from the scene.
"We suspect the motive for the killing was robbery," Ramatseba said.
"The continuing taxi violence in Limpopo also could not be ruled out as a motive for the killing.
"We have opened two murder cases and the suspects will appear in the Tubatse magistrate's court tomorrow."
Five other taxi owners were killed in the Mopani district in recent months.
That brings the death toll for taxi violence-related deaths in the province to eight.
Other taxi owners killed in the recent past include Amos Mhlanga, Michael Malajie, Matome Maake and Cap Ramaselela from Marimone village in Lenyenye.
