The National Democratic Convention has questioned whether the climate for a free and fair election exists in KwaZulu-Natal and called on the ANC to discipline one of its local councillors.

Nadeco yesterday accused Zandile Gumede of intimidating their members in Amawoti, outside Phoenix, during an attempted voter registration meeting.

The Nadeco leadership claimed that its delegation, including its president Hawu Mbatha, was prevented from holding a meeting at a pre-booked venue because Gumede was holding an ANC meeting on the field when they got there.

"She began insulting our leadership. Our members from the area were told that their homes would be burnt to the ground," Nadeco provincial secretary Lucky Mthethwa said.

"This is not good. "

ANC eThekwini chairman John Mchunu said they were not aware of the incident. He said the ANC branch had reported that Nadeco had disrupted their meeting with loudspeakers.
