The Limpopo MEC for local government and housing Maite Nkoana-Mashabane is the "most hard-working" politician in the country.

Her department's service delivery performance record was judged the best compared with that of the other housing departments in the country's nine provinces.

Nkoana-Mashabane's department was awarded the Best Provincial Housing Department of the Year in South Africa at a glittering ceremony in Durban on Friday.

The award is part of the coveted National Govan Mbeki Awards.

The award seeks to help the provinces build sustainable human settlements and achieve millennium development goals by 2014.

Nkoana-Mashabane's department outclassed the housing departments of the other eight provinces to win a trophy and the R3million prize money.

Asked during a media briefing yesterday what the secret of her success was, a smiling Nkoana-Mashabane described herself as a firm believer in "hard work and teamwork".
