In a move that could set tongues wagging about rampant divisions, Mamelodi Sundowns have appointed a committee to investigate recent poor performances by their team.

The club website yesterday announced the appointment of a three-man board subcommittee, which will be chaired by Dan Simelane.

This is after recent suggestions that the team is split in two - with the Ted Dumitru and new players in one corner, and coach Trott Moloto, the rest of the technical team and other players in the other.

The rift was illuminated recently with Mbulelo Mabizela's disappearing act, as the two factions issued conflicting statements to the media.

The drama spilled over to supporters who bayed for Dumitru's blood after the defeat to Lamontville Golden Arrows in a league match.

Club spokesman Mahlatse Mphahlele denied a link between the committee and differences in the team.

"We did not have the best of starts this season and we are a club with a lot of expectation on us," Mphahlele said.

He was loath to admit the move was just a smoke screen to get someone fired.

"We want to be the best and the truth is, we could have done better," he said.

Sundowns, who Moloto rescued from 10th position to a fourth-place league finish last season, went on to win the SAA Supa 8 cup and the Nedbank Cup towards the end of last season.

In the new season, they have reached the finals of the MTN8, losing to Kaizer Chiefs on penalties, and are eighth on the log with four points after three league matches.

The subcommittee will reportedly "meet with the technical team, management and other stakeholders to identify the reason for the recent poor performance of the club and to make recommendations to ensure that the performance of the club improves".
