Inspector Sam Tselanyane said the pupils were going to a matric farewell after-party on Sunday when the taxi overturned at about 5pm.
Six of the pupils and the driver died on the scene. Another pupil died later at the Potchefstroom Hospital.
One pupil is in critical condition while 10 others sustained minor injuries.
