Lekota wants to hold on to power

Since 1994 the enemies of the ANC have pointed out that the movement will only be defeated by itself - that is through a split within.

Since 1994 the enemies of the ANC have pointed out that the movement will only be defeated by itself - that is through a split within.

I can only imagine the excitement in those quarters as Mosiuoa Lekota delivers this dream for them.

Lekota was a gallant fighter when we needed such men during apartheid. I rate him among the top in the pool of brains we need at this critical time in the struggle.

It is a pity that he has chosen the path followed by most power-mongers in Africa: that of wanting to claim a monopoly of the right to hold on to positions of power even when the will of the people is to have them step down.

People of his kind will do whatever it takes to hold on to power, even if they play into the hands of those wishing to reverse the gains of the very people they fought hard to liberate.

Lekota is now using the ignorance of people to turn them against the ANC.

Lekota must know that we are jealous of comrades like him and would have loved to retain him in our movement.

We would have wanted his commitment to our cause to overcome selfishness in the interests of our country and continent.

But our hopes seem doomed each time we observe his actions.
