The cases for Zuma's dismissal and Mbeki's recall are not similar. The muddled politics we find our country in today, where giant professionals in politics, business and the judiciary reduce themselves to behave like hounds hunting in a pack for a wronged master, has its roots in Zuma's claim that Mbeki is the ringmaster of his persecution.

Zuma was relieved of his position as deputy president by Mbeki after the conviction of his corrupt financial adviser. Mbeki acted on the evidence of a conviction rather than the controversial comments that were not even made, by Judge Hillary Squires, about a generally corrupt relationship between Schabir Shaik and Zuma. He could not make those comments, much as Judge Chris Nicholson should not have made those highly sensitive inferences about Mbeki in the matter between the NPA and Zuma.

Worse still is that the political conspiracy theory as picked up by Nicholson had just been marked by the court as vague, with no substance and Zuma himself, as well as his lawyers, agreeing.

In spite of all this, I think there is still a case for Zuma to answer.
