The Modjadji royal family, known the world over for their rain-making powers, will tomorrow begin with the ritual to bring rain to Limpopo.
The family will blow a secret rain-making horn to invoke the powers of their ancestors. The horn was inherited from King Monomotapa of Zimbabwe long before 1800 when the Modjadjis came to South Africa.
Five closely related families will assemble at the Khethakoni royal village for the ritual which will be conducted between tomorrow and October 18; October 25 and November 1; the Matshwi on Saturday November 8 and November 15 at five different places.
A spokesman for the Modjadji royal family and council, Clement Modjadji, said the Balobedu regent, Prince Mpapatla Modjadji, who took over the reign after the death of his sister Caroline Makobo Modjadji, will conduct the rituals.
Clement said Mpapatla was expected to plead with the ancestors for rain. A royal family member said the regent would pour a mixture of beer called mphapho on to a sacred piece of earth called thokoleng.
The mixture will then be fed to a sacred black cow called kgomo ya thokola to drink and later to the rest of the family members.
