The sun is about to shine on Jerusalema - a local movie that explores the theme of crime - after its selection for a possible nomination in this year's Oscars.

The film, which has been lauded as a true reflection of South Africa's flatland life, has been selected by the National Film and Video Foundation for consideration for nomination in the Best Foreign Film category of the Oscars.

If nominated it will follow in the footsteps of two other local films - Yesterday, which featured Leleti Khumalo, and Tsotsi, which went on to win in the same category.

It will also means that South African films are finding a place at the world's premier film awards .

Jerusalema was written and directed by Ralph Ziman and produced by Tendeka Matatu.

It features top actors such as Rapulana Seiphemo, who plays a Hillbrow gangster named Lucky Kunene.

"Jerusalema depicts crime, corruption and the transgressions of the new South Africa," Matatu said. "The film was released at the end of August and continues to enjoy a successful run in South African theatres.

"We thank audiences for the amazing support they have given us to date."

The film was among three submitted to the NFVF to be considered for submission to the 81st Oscars for nomination to represent South Africa.

A panel appointed by the NFVF sat down last week to consider a film that would represent South Africa. A unanimous decision was taken to present Jerusalema as the official film in the Best Foreign Film category.
