Victims of abuse and neglect in a rural town in Mpumalanga no longer have to travel long distances for counselling after a social services office was opened in their area.

MEC for the provincial health and social services department, Fish Mahlalela, officially opened the office in Umjindi, Barberton, on Saturday.

Until recently, the community of Umjindi was serviced by one social worker.

Mahlalela said he was sure that the "stress levels of the people who had to walk long distances to be counselled would drop".

"We promised that we would bring service to people and this is just one of the many efforts that we make to do that," he said.
