'Cleaner did not have strange illness'

The death of a 39-year-old cleaner at Morningside Medi-Clinic yesterday was not related to the deaths of three others who contracted a mysterious infectious disease, said the clinic last night.

"She was not in contact with the patient. She died of a neurological disease," said clinic spokesman Melinda Pelser.

Pelser said two relatives of the nurse who had attended to the first victim were brought into the clinic for observation.

"The adult female, who is in her 20s has a slight fever and the 11-year-old boy does not have any symptoms of the disease," said Pelser.

Pelser said the two were brought into the hospital as a precautionary measure. - Namhla Tshisela
