A member of the South African National Defence Force in Phalaborwa was arrested yesterday for the alleged murder of his girlfriend.

The 46-year-old man, who worked at Seventh SA Infantry Batallion in Phalaborwa, will face a charge of murder in the Giyani magistrate's court today.

The man, whose name is being withheld until he formally appears in court, was arrested at his home in Mbaola village near Giyani for the murder of Mildred Mavunda, 22, with whom he was romantically involved.

Police spokesman Captain Moatshe Ngoepe said the woman went missing after she was last seen in the company of the accused on September 29.

The accused allegedly found Mavundla walking in the street with another man. He ordered the man to leave before disappearing with her to an unknown destination.

The victim's body was later found on the outskirts of the village four days after the alleged incident, he said.
