Give food vendors a slice of 2010 pie

I am concerned about the issue of local fast-food vendors during the 2010 World Cup.

I am concerned about the issue of local fast-food vendors during the 2010 World Cup.

It is a great pity that they will not be allowed to operate within or outside the stadiums.

Tim Modise , the spokesman for the local organising committee, has said that only Fifa's commercial partners such as McDonald's will be allowed to trade in the stadiums.

Visitors would like to sample local food such as dumplings, skopo, pap and shisa nyama, instead of McDonald's. Vendors will be able to provide good quality food. Fifa must be told as soon as possible that there are people who have been selling food outside stadiums since the 1980s.

Food vendors have been told to buy mobile kitchens which cost nearly R45000 if they want to operate outside the stadiums.

I don't see empowerment taking place with such strict regulations.

Vendors were also told to pay licence fees if they want to operate.

As happened in Durban two weeks ago, many food vendors might again be left with sad faces in 2010. It has been clear from the onset that local vendors will not get a slice of the 2010 World Cup pie.
