Gauteng's first black district surgeon, Dr Thamsanqa Sylvester Bomvana, has died and will be buried today. Bomvana, 60, died on Friday after a prolonged illness.
He became a surgeon in 1991 and served as the SRC president at the University of the Southern Africa.
"My father was passionate about the development of the community. He was a remarkable and cheerful person," his son Vuyo Bomvana said.
Bomvana held a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry and zoology and a diploma in forensic medicine, among other qualifications.
He worked at Chris Hani-Baragwanath, George Mukari and Coronation hospitals and then opened his own practice in 1988.
The funeral service will be held at the Bryanston Resurrection Catholic Church at 9am. The cortege will leave for Fourways Memorial Park at 11.30am.
