The Calcutta police have finally arrested a man who allegedly sodomised a four-year-old boy and gave him 30 cents for his silence on Tuesday evening.
This is after Sowetan's intervention.
The child's mother called Sowetan yesterday morning complaining that the police had refused to arrest the suspect, who is her neighbour and who was still at home, claiming that they did not have vehicles.
The mother was shocked when the boy returned home crying and saying the man next door had done things to him.
"I nearly had a heart attack when I heard what my son told me. He even said the man removed a plastic [condom] from his penis and asked him to throw it in the pit toilet outside the house," said the distraught mother.
Mpumalanga police spokesman Superintendent Abie Khoabane said he was surprised to hear that a police station gave such a lame excuse.
"We have resourced all our police stations and this can't be the real reason," he said yesterday.
"I request the family to go and lodge a complaint with the station commissioner so that the allegations can be investigated."
