Women across the country are going all-out to equip themselves with information and skills needed to take advantage of economic and social development opportunities.
In Durban today more than 500 women will converge on the Royal Hotel to attend a conference aimed at empowering them around the issues of leadership and development.
The conference, which ends tomorrow, will also look at the role played by women to improve service delivery in their communities and stereotypes that hinder women's development and success.
Guest speakers include Angie Makwetla, founder and chief executive of Makwetla & Associates; Thobekile Maphumulo, mayor of Mkhambathini municipality; Yvette Montalbano, chief executive of Businesswomen's Association; and Dr Ncoza Dlova, a consultant and lecturer at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Dlova, a dermatologist, has conducted many lectures nationally and abroad. She has received many accolades for her research, including the use of clay as a sunscreen by black women.
In Pretoria, the African Housewives League will host a conference to celebrate 45 years of its existence. Under the theme "Turning the Tides of Poverty", the league will look at the effects of poverty and malnutrition and the role the league has played to fight the scourge.
"The league has had a busy year getting involved in activities aimed at benefiting the poor and the underprivileged in rural communities. We have started income generating projects such as food gardens, sewing and bakery to help fight poverty," said Busi Mavuka, the league's national president.
The league, a non-governmental organisation, was formed in 1963 by Keabetsoe Nyembezi, who saw the need for empowerment.
The conference, to be held at the Colosseum Executive Hotel in Arcadia, Pretoria, starts today and ends on Sunday.
