President Kgalema Motlanthe's passionate call on Sunday evening to all South Africans to unite and work together had hardly been uttered when on Monday the ANC was at it again, calling for the scalps of some of the leaders perceived or suspected of being supportive of former president Thabo Mbeki.
In his masterly address Motlanthe reassured the nation that all South Africans have a place in the sun.
Now the ANC at Luthuli House has once again come out with something contrary to what the Union Buildings say by hounding out premiers Mbhazima Shilowa and Beatrice Marshoff , though the former, obviously from a sense of unity, stated that he had done so for personal reasons.
For a premier whose record is a mirror to some of his colleagues and in the interest of unity, one would have hoped that the organisation would have prevailed on him to stay as they did with Trevor Manuel.
It remains to be seen who else will be pushed out, thus frustrating Motlanthe's calls. It also remains to be seen how many and which officials who have ties with the former president and ministers will be retained.
We hope sanity and tolerance will triumph in due course.
