Residents of Limpopo's small town of Modjadjiskloof have expressed concern at the department of health's decision to convert Duiwelskloof Hospital into a health centre with effect from tomorrow.
The hospital was built in 1921 as a malaria centre.
It was turned into a hospital because of the number of people living in the town.
It is situated next to the Wolkberg Mountain, about two kilometres from the town's central business district.
According to the Modjadjiskloof community spokesman who is also a former member of the hospital board, Pieter van Niekerk, they are not satisfied with the decision because the hospital was providing a service to all race groups.
He told Sowetan that the government had betrayed the masses and decided to proclaim the hospital a health centre, despite the petition that concerned residents had previously presented to the government.
The changeover process will be effected from today, according to Van Niekerk.
He said it will be a pity for some residents of Modjadjiskloof because they won't be able to afford to go to Kgapane Hospital.
Provincial health spokesman Phuti Seloba said the hospital has in fact operated as a health centre for about three years, and the changeover process would be just to formalise the proclamation.
Seloba assured the people in the area that they would still get full services from the health centre, like they did before.
He said people would continue to get full health services for free.
Patients would also be accommodated at the centre for three days before being referred to the nearby Kgapane Hospital, he said.
