He wanted to spend the afternoon with his girlfriend and their four-month-old baby, but a friend insisted they go to a nearby stokvel party - and a few hours later he was dead.

Sandile Mdluli, 24, of Bluegumview, Ekurhuleni, had just returned from the party on Sunday morning when three men armed with a gun and knives kicked open his rented shack and stabbed him before gang-raping his 17-year-old girlfriend.

"I tried to wake him up when they opened the door but he did not wake up. He was unusually drunk," his girlfriend said.

She said one of the thugs was the same friend who came to fetch him so they could go to the party. She could not recognise the other two.

"I saw him though they covered my face with a blanket before raping me," she said.

She identified the man as Thulani. She claims that Thulani comes from the same area as Mdluli in KwaZulu-Natal.

"The other two thugs used condoms but Thulani did not. I don't know how am I going to face the world. What will I tell my boy when he grows up?" she asked.

Mdluli was stabbed once in the chest and died in hospital.

The girlfriend said the thugs stole a laptop, TV games, DVD player, R300 in cash, two cellphones and other household items.

The girlfriend said Mdluli had been with Thulani when they went to withdraw money from an ATM.

"I suspect that they drugged him because he had never been so drunk before," the teenager said.

Dumisani Mdluli, Sandile's brother, could not believe that his younger brother was dead.

Springs police spokesman Captain Johannes Ramphora confirmed the incident and said no one had been arrested.
