Officials at Polokwane Provincial Hospital are stuck with an unknown man who was stark naked when he was brought in by police at the weekend.

Nurses said the man is mentally ill and confused. They suspect that he was beaten up and robbed of his money and clothes because he has a bruised right ear, allegedly sustained during the assault.

When Sowetan visited him at the hospital yesterday, the man was incoherent.

He claimed that some people had mugged him and took R1000 from him before stripping him naked.

Nurses at the hospital described him as schizophrenic and amnesic. When asked about his identity, he first said his name was "Smuts" but later said he was "Ntandiso Smith from Blesbokfontein".

Asked about his family, he mentioned Alfred and Mamore Mthimkhulu Radebe as his son and wife respectively.

Polokwane Hospital spokesman Lesibana Chokoe has called on members of the public who have missing relatives to come to the hospital's Ward C to identify the man.

"Since we have no idea who he is or who his next of kin is, we will keep him under the supervision of the nurses here. The doctors will try to analyse his mental state in a bid find his relatives," he said.

Anyone with information regarding the man should contact Chokoe on 015-287-5004/9 or 072-219- 3109.
