LONDON - Arsenal need a victory against FC Porto in the Champions League tonight to lift the gloom after a stunning setback in the Premier League.
Arsenal missed out on the chance to go top of the Premier League after its second loss in six matches - a 2-1 defeat at home on Saturday to newly promoted Hull, which started the season as favourite to be relegated.
The Gunners want a win over the visiting Portuguese team after opening their Champions League campaign with a 1-1 draw at Dynamo Kiev two weeks ago.
"I don't know if we can afford to lose again but what we delivered today was not good enough," Wenger said after the Hull game.
"We know that. So the important thing now is not how many games we can lose this season but preparing well for Tuesday (tonight)."
Things change quickly at the start of the season, when just a handful of points can separate teams seemingly far apart in the Premier League. So, instead of going into today's match with his team as surprise league leaders, Wenger has to lift a bunch of demoralized players.
Wenger could drop Netherlands forward Robin Van Persie after an ineffective performance against Hull, and could turn to 17-year-old Aaron Ramsey to replace Denilson in the holding midfield role vacated by the off-season departure of Mathieu Flamini to AC Milan.
Deco, who won the Champions League with Porto in 2004, has been paying close attention to Arsenal since he joined Chelsea in the off-season and expects a close game.
"FC Porto have the chance to win the game, but it will depend on how committed they are," Deco said in an interview with Portuguese radio station Antena 1.
"If they don't get affected by the atmosphere in the stadium, then the game will be balanced, and then they could win it.
"Arsenal are an unpredictable team because they have such a young squad. They play a good game one day and a bad one the next."
