The eagerly awaited IBO junior featherweight vacant title fight between Thomas Mashaba and Jackson Asiku, scheduled for October 25 at the Hordern Pavilion in Sydney, Australia, has been KOed by the arrest of Golden Gloves's Adam Watt.
Australian Watt is one of two men arrested last week for conspiring to import enough chemicals to make R350million worth of the drug 'ice'.
Watt, 40, was stopped in eight rounds by Sebastian Rothman for the WBU belt at Carnival City, Brakpan in Ekurhuleni on February 17 2001. According to AFP, Watt and Radoslov Spadina, 43, were arrested at their homes in Manly by Australian police. They have been charged with conspiracy to import 210kg of ephedrine into Australia from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
It is reported that their case has also exposed what Australian police called "a well organised drug ring based in Manly" following the arrests. They had allegedly travelled internationally to meet with other members of a global drug syndicate.
Golden Gloves tournament co-ordinator Shona McTaggart described the whole scenario as a "huge shock". She said promoter Rodney Berman was not sure what to do "for now". A reliable source said tickets for this free to air television fight in Australia had already been sold out.
