Ilyasah Shabazz, daughter of human rights activist Malcolm X, will be a guest of honour at this year's South African Traditional Music Awards (Satma).

The third Satma awards take place tomorrow in Durban and the glittering event will be held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Convention Centre.

The main aim of the awards is to promote, preserve, develop and honour current and past legends of indigenous music.

Malcolm X is known for dedicating his life to advocating human rights for marginalised people.

He was assassinated on February 21 1965.

Dumsani Goba, co-founder of the awards, said Shabazz would be in the country to accept a special award dedicated to her father for the role he played in defending marginalised people.

"We have decided to go an extra mile this year by honouring Malcolm X for his outstanding and remarkable contribution to the liberation of black people.

"He is one of the black leaders whose contribution to the liberation can never be measured," he said.

Shabazz was expected to land at Durban International Airport last night.
